Heavy rains, thunderstorms to close out what will be a warm weekend in Kansas City

National Weather Service

A cold end to the work week in Kansas City will give way to unseasonably warm weather that could include heavy rains from strong to severe storms, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

But first, the metro will have to endure a cold Friday that could see some freezing drizzle or a light wintry mix in the evening.

The morning got off to a chilly start as temperatures fell to 11 degrees shortly before 7 a.m. at Kansas City International Airport. Winds, however, made it feel colder as the wind chill dropped to -5 degrees.

Conditions are expected to gradually warm into the mid- and upper 30s under partly sunny skies in the metro. Freezing drizzle or a shot of a light wintry mix will be possible, primarily south of U.S. 50 highway in the southern part of the Kansas City area.

“With surface temperatures expected to hover near freezing, slick conditions can be anticipated if precipitation develops,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

Conditions will rebound this weekend, with temperatures climbing into the 50s on Saturday and 60s on Sunday, the weather service said. Typically, Kansas City sees temperatures in the upper 40s this time of year.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop Sunday evening, bringing widespread rain to the area into Monday morning. Some of the overnight storms could be strong to severe and heavy rainfall is possible from eastern Kansas through western and northwestern Missouri.

Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain is expected overnight across the Kansas City area. Strong winds are also possible, gusting up to 40 mph in the metro, according to the weather service.
