A Wichita Falls man pleaded guilty Tuesday to killing Clifton Carr, 20, in the parking lot of a shopping center, court records show.

James Sherman Green III was sentenced to 35 years in prison Tuesday for Carr's shooting death in 2017, during an apparent drug deal gone wrong, according to court documents.

Seventy-eighth District Judge Meredith Kennedy sentenced Green, 24, to prison time as part of a plea agreement, court filings show.

Green will receive 1,549 days of jail time credit, according to court documents.

Murder is a first-degree felony punishable by up to life in prison.

Green was being held Wednesday in the Wichita County Law Enforcement Center, according to online jail records.

Carr was the father of a son, was employed at Kohl's Department Store and attended City View High School, according to his obituary.

He was shot in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 3100 block of Jacksboro Highway, according to a police affidavit.

Wichita Falls police responded to a report of a vehicle accident at about 6:47 p.m. Aug. 27, 2017, in which a driver was bleeding from the neck, according to court documents.

They found that Carr, the driver, had been shot, and witnesses told police a man fled the scene in a car, court filings show.

A witness told police she saw a man standing at the driver's side door of Carr's vehicle, and the man pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired one shot into the moving vehicle, according to court records.

Carr's vehicle backed up until it circled around and hit a business, and then the man got into a dark blue sedan and left before police came, court documents show.

A witness who was in the back seat of Carr's vehicle when he was shot told police Carr came to the shopping center for a drug deal with a man Carr identified as Green, according to court documents.

A witness told police Carr got out of his vehicle when a dark blue sedan pulled up and got into the back seat, and then Carr later went back to his own vehicle, court filings show.

A witness told police a man got out of the dark blue car, walked up to Carr's door, told him, "This is fake," and shot Carr as he was backing his vehicle out, according to court documents.

Carr got out of his vehicle, walked into a restaurant and collapsed, according to a previous Times Record News story. Restaurant workers immediately called 911.

Carr was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:55 a.m. Aug. 28, 2017, according to court documents.

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Green Nov. 21, 2017, in New Orleans on a murder warrant, according to a previous TRN story.
