Tiger Woods was unable to take part in this year’s Ryder Cup competition, as the legendary golfer continues to rehab from the injuries suffered in his single-car accident in Southern California earlier this year.

However, the longtime American star managed to keep in touch with this year’s United States team.

According to members of the U.S. squad, Woods sent an encouraging text message prior to the start of the event.

“We got a nice message from Tiger last night,” Xander Schauffele told reporters. “We referred to it a few times today.”

The message seems to have helped inspire the American squad.

The United States leads Europe, 11-5, heading into Sunday’s singles matches. It’s the American’s biggest lead heading into Sunday in a long time.

Does Woods deserve partial credit for inspiring the United States players? Perhaps.

“TIGER, Thanks for sending your message; the Team needs your encouragement and determination. You understand what it takes mentality to WIN!!!” one fan wrote.

“That’s the difference. The Europeans got a letter from Monty…” another fan joked.

Several members of the U.S. team have praised Woods for his text, too.

“Harry mentioned to me walking down No. 9, like how cool it was that Tiger is so into it. That’s the big thing is he’s so invested in this team. He’s not here physically, but the gist of basically what he was saying was I’m cheering you guys on, I’m right there with you and go fight and make us proud,” Tony Finau said.

“We were able to do that, and if TW’s watching, thanks for that text, brother, I think it helped us a lot.”

Patrick Cantlay added: “(There’s) no better role model and no better leader, and just somebody that you can always learn from. I saw him last week at home, and just picked his brain on Ryder Cup and applied some of that here today.”

The U.S. team will look to close out the Ryder Cup in style on Sunday.
