Georgia high school shooting suspect ID’d as Colt Gray, 14

The shooter who allegedly killed four people and wounded nine others at a Georgia high school on Wednesday has been identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, authorities said.

Gray, a student, opened fire at Apalachee High School in Winder shortly before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey told reporters later that afternoon.

The gunman surrendered to police as soon as he was confronted by a school resource officer, Hosey said.

Hosey said the teen will be charged with murder as an adult.

The campus was crowded with law enforcement vehicles from multiple agencies by 11 a.m.

At least two victims were evacuated from the scene via medical helicopter. Other casualties were treated for gunshot wounds at a local hospital.

Two of the dead were students, two were teachers, Hosey said. One of the wounded was identified as David Phenix, a special education teacher at the school.

Phenix’s daughter, Katie, posted an update on Facebook that her dad had been shot in the foot and hip, “shattering” his hip bone.

“He arrived to the hospital alert and awake. He just got out of surgery and is stable. We will update as we hear new information. We are so, so lucky, but please keep our family as well as the AHS family in your prayers,” she wrote.

The school building was evacuated and all the students were moved to the athletic stadium, where they were interviewed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and reunited with their parents, 11Alive News reported.

The massacre happened just five weeks into the new school year after Barrow County schools resumed classes Aug 1.

A number of students shared their harrowing recollection of the frenzy, some recalling grisly details like “a huge puddle of blood in the classroom.”

Apalachee senior Sergio Caldera, 17, told ABC News that he was in chemistry class when he heard shots.

“My teacher goes and opens the door to see what’s going on. Another teacher comes running in and tells her to close the door because there’s an active shooter,” he said.

Caldera’s teacher locked the door and the students ran to the back of the room, he recalled.

He said they heard screams from outside as they huddled together.

At one point, Caldera said, someone banged on the classroom door and yelled “open up!” several times.

Camille Nelms, 14, told WXIA she remembered fearing for her life at the terrifying moment Gray entered her classroom.

“I was crying. I didn’t want to die that way,” the teen told WXIA.
