The San Francisco 49ers made a very bold move weeks ahead of the NFL Draft, jumping up to the No. 3 overall pick. After weeks of speculation, the team took quarterback Trey Lance out of North Dakota State.

Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo is the likely Week 1 starter for the Niners. However, it sounds like Lance has acquitted himself nicely, after playing just one game last year due to the delayed FCS season with COVID-19 messing up the college football schedule.

Superstar tight end George Kittle is a fan already. “I think Trey has all the attributes to be a special quarterback,” he told Good Morning Football on Tuesday morning. “He takes risks. He’s trying to fit into the small windows.

“I’m excited to see his progress throughout training camp. He’s definitely in the right spot.”

The San Francisco 49ers are trying to thread an interesting needle, with a veteran quarterback that led the team to a Super Bowl back during the 2019 season also developing a top 10 pick. They mortgaged their future draft capital to make that move, but Kittle thinks the team remains in win-now mode.

We’ll see if Trey Lance breaks into those current plans sooner than later. The early returns on Jimmy G this offseason have been very good, but very few quarterbacks drafted as early as Lance was are allowed to sit and wait for even a full season at this point.

The 49ers open their 2021 season at the Detroit Lions on Sept. 12.
