Free hot dogs and $1 water cases: New Sacramento grocery store offers inflation-busting deals

Trying to keep prices low as inflation rises and drive costumers to its location, a new Oak Park grocery store has sent more than 3,000 coupon flyers to nearby Sacramento residents for food as low as 39 cents.

Rancho San Miguel Market opened on Broadway in March, providing an essential need to the historically underresourced neighborhood.

The flyer contains more than $33 worth of deals ranging from apple juice to brisket, valid through July 26. You may not have gotten one — but check your mail, because the store sent them out to some residents within a three-mile radius.

If you didn’t get a coupon flyer, Rancho San Miguel also has weekly specials.

“From supply chain issues to the increasing of the goods — we are still fighting with that to stay at a low price,” said Wilson Nunn Jr., the store director. “This particular coupon is an effort to let people know who we are.”

The employee-owned California grocery chain, run by PAQ Inc. — with locations in Greenfield, Livingston, Lodi, Madera, Merced and Stockton — specializes in Hispanic products and affordable prices. The Oak Park store is equipped with a bakery, poultry and seafood department, salsa and ceviche bar and “authentic Hispanic grab and go” items.

“This site is commonly referred to as a food desert. There are no low-cost grocery store options in the Oak Park, Tahoe Park and Elmhurst neighborhoods,” said PAQ Inc. CEO Bill Cote in a statement before the store’s opening, according to a previous Bee report. “Our stores are designed to appeal to price conscious consumers with quality products.”

For the next four weeks, if they received the flyer, customers can redeem their coupons with in-store purchases only, depending on the expiration date. Only one coupon can be used per visit and the last round of coupons expire July 26.

A few more rules on the coupons: they can only be redeemed at the Rancho San Miguel’s Broadway location and it “excludes alcohol, beer, wine and gift cards,” according to grocery store’s flyer. Shoppers must present the coupon at checkout.

Below is a list of the coupons, according to Rancho San Miguel’s mailed coupon slip. The store is open seven days a week 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 4401 Broadway:

Customers can opt to use the $10 coupon with at least a $50 purchase, but it can’t be used in conjunction with the others listed above.

Since Food Source closed in the neighborhood in 2020, residents had shopped at other nearby grocery stores including the Foods Co. near Fruitridge Road and Stockton Boulevard, and the Safeway at Curtis Park, The Bee previously reported. Those are driving distance for many Oak Park residents.

Safeway has a free member rewards program offering weekly deals and coupons and Foods Co. has digital coupons and other savings listed on its website.
