Former Packers Exec. Says Team Is Secretly ‘Fine’ With Aaron Rodgers Skipping Minicamp
Aaron Rodgers did not report to Green Bay Packers minicamp this week, escalating the tense situation with the franchise. One former Packers executive doesn’t think the team is super worried about the quarterback missing minicamp itself.
Andrew Brandt, a team VP from 1999-2008, was around during the transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers. After multiple offseasons where Favre would hint at or announce his retirement, only to change his mind, the team ultimately handed the job to Rodgers for the 2008 season. During that time, Favre would miss a lot of the team’s offseason work, giving Rodgers the opportunity to step in as QB1.
Brandt says that the current situation gives the new Packers regime a similar opportunity with Jordan Love, the team’s first-round pick in 2020. Love has been taking first-team reps this week, backed up by Blake Bortles and Kurt Benkert.
“Packers will never admit it, but they would be fine with Aaron skipping minicamp (and maybe some of training camp),” Brandt tweeted on Tuesday morning. “When Favre stayed in Mississippi those offseasons, we got to see Aaron run the team in the offseason, great evaluation period.”

The Green Bay Packers have made it very clear that they want to figure things out with Aaron Rodgers after his MVP season in 2020. The team has been steadfast in that it will not trade him this year.
At the same time, Brandt may be on to something here. Seeing what Love can do as the Packers “starter” in the offseason does give the franchise a great opportunity here, assuming it can get Rodgers’ back in the fold. Rodgers’ offseason work instilled the confidence for the team to eventually hand the reins over from Favre in 2008, when he made yet another retirement gambit, and was ultimately traded to the New York Jets.

If Love can show that he’s ready, the team may be able to pull off another seamless quarterback transition. If not, the Packers may be able to more easily cut their losses and roll with Rodgers until his career is up, if they can win him back over of course.
