Former Dallas Cowboy and Super Bowl champion Walt Garrison dies at 79

NFL and Dallas Cowboys fans are mourning the loss of Walt Garrison, the former Dallas Cowboys fullback who died at the age of 79 earlier this week.

Garrison played his entire nine-year career with Cowboys from 1966-1974 amassing 3,886 with 30 rushing touchdowns in 119 games with the team.

Garrison was born in Denton and attended Lewisville High School before playing collegiate football for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

The Cowboys selected Garrison with the 79th selection in the 1966 NFL Draft. Garrison was also a real-life cowboy off the football field.

Garrison participated in rodeos and wrestled steers in the offseason. Garrison’s career ended in 1975 due to an injury he suffered while being a rodeo cowboy.

Garrison was selected to the team’s 25th anniversary team and helped the team win Super Bowl VI 24-3 over the Miami Dolphins. Garrison is also in the Fort Worth Cowboy Hall of Fame one of only three Dallas Cowboys to be in both.
