Former Cal Poly pitcher Bryan Woo makes Major League debut with Seattle Mariners

Former Cal Poly pitcher Bryan Woo became the 22nd former Cal Poly baseball player to reach the Major Leagues when he made his debut with the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.

The Mariners called up Woo from Double-A Arkansas to pitch against the Texas Rangers, who have the second-best record in the American League.

Before getting called up, Woo was named Minor League Pitcher of the Month of May for the second-straight month and sported a 2.05 ERA. He recorded 59 strikeouts while only giving up two home runs and 12 walks in his minor league stint.

His first Major League game was a bit rougher, however.

Although Woo struck out four batters, he only went two innings, giving up six runs on seven hits in a 16-6 loss to the Rangers.

Woo, who was drafted 174th overall out of Cal Poly by the Mariners in 2021, sported a 6.49 ERA in 31 appearances from 2019 to 2021 for the Mustangs. His best season came in 2020 where he held batters to a 3.57 ERA and a .206 batting average.

Woo had a delayed start to his career. When he was drafted by the Mariners, he was recovering Tommy John surgery due to an injury he suffered at Cal Poly. Woo didn’t make his professional debut until June 6, 2022.
