Food & Wine says KC’s burnt ends are the best thing to eat in Missouri. But Kansas?

Food & Wine drew from its editors’ extensive travel and passion for food to come up with a new list of “The One Thing You Have to Eat in Every State.”

For Missouri, the publication picked burnt ends from such Kansas City spots as Arthur Bryant’s Barbeque: “there’s still nothing quite like your first burnt ends sandwich, an unholy mess of bark and meat and sauce. For many Americans raised on sanitized chain barbecue restaurants, Bryant’s provides an excellent reminder of exactly what barbecue is supposed to be.”

It also mentions Gates Bar-B-Q “mostly for the ribs” and LC’s Bar-B-Q on the “shaggy fringe of the city.”

For Kansas, it recommends fried chicken dinners. It gives shoutouts to two vintage restaurants in Pittsburg, Kansas — Chicken Annie’s Original and Chicken Mary’s, “serving big plates of dusted and crusted chicken, served with classic sides like German potato salad and cut green beans.”

Other regional treats that Food & Wine doesn’t want you to miss include pork tenderloins in Iowa, Runza rolls in Nebraska, white clam pizza in Connecticut, hot tamales in Mississippi, and Cincinnati chili in Ohio.
