Flood watch issued for most of the Rio Grande Valley

Aug. 15—A flood watch has been issued for most of the Rio Grande Valley until 7 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service in Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley is reporting.

The NWS reports additional bands of thunderstorms and heavy rain Monday could move over areas that received 2 to 4 inches of rain over the weekend and could produce flooding.

Areas in the flood watch include the cities of Brownsville, Rio Grande City, Raymondville, Weslaco, Sarita, Zapata, Edinburg, Pharr, Mission, McAllen, San Manuel, Falfurrias, Roma, Harlingen, and Hebbronville.

Low-lying and poor drainage areas will be the most susceptible to flooding, according to the NWS.

There's a 60% chance of heavy rain in McAllen, a 50% chance of heavy rain in Harlingen and a 40% chance of heavy rain in Brownsville Monday.

Residents are urged to monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flooding warnings. Individuals living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding occur, the NWS reports.

Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico made its way through the Valley Sunday dropping anywhere from 2 to 4 inches of rain if not more.

Motorists traveling from Brownsville to Harlingen were caught in torrential rains with some drivers pulling over to the side of the road waiting for the rain to stop. Many were driving with their hazard lights on.

At least two accidents were spotted between Brownsville and San Benito on U.S. Expressway 77/83 Sunday afternoon with law enforcement at both accident scenes.
