A flood watch has been issued for Centre County as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby move through the area.

The flood watch will be in effect beginning 2 a.m. Friday through 2 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Flooding from “excessive rainfall” will be possible, the alert states.

Joe Bauco, meteorologist at NWS in State College, said the main impact from Tropical Storm Debby is going to be from the rain.

“We’re expecting widespread amounts of three to five inches in the area, with localized amounts up to six or seven inches possible,” Bauco said. “That could lead to some flooding, especially of smaller creeks and streams, but also of low lying and flood prone areas.”

The rain will start overnight into Friday, he said. The heaviest rain will come during the morning and afternoon Friday before tapering off around 8 p.m.

He encouraged people to make sure they have a way to receive warnings in case any flash flood warnings are issued. In the event that a flash flood warning is issued, people should get to a higher level of their home, Bauco said.

The NWS forecast for the area states wind gusts as high as 24 mph can be expected Friday and gusts as high as 20 mph on Saturday. Rain is in the forecast through Friday evening, with sunshine expected Saturday.
