It’s tax season for Kansas City residents on both sides of the state line. The Internal Revenue Service has been accepting tax returns since January, and you have a couple of months left to file if you haven’t already.

The IRS is anticipating over 168 million returns this year. You might want to get started if you haven’t filed your taxes yet.

WHAT DO I NEED TO FILE MY TAXES?

You will need these essential pieces of information before you file your taxes this year:

  • Social security or tax identification number

  • Your date of birth

  • Income forms, such as a W2 if you were employed, a 1099-G if you were unemployed or 1099-NEC if you were self-employed or an independent contractor

  • Any types of deductions, such as charitable contributions or medical expenses

WHAT’S THE LAST DAY TO FILE MY TAXES?

The deadline to file a 2022 tax return is April 18 in both Kansas and Missouri. If you can’t file by then, request an extension and pay taxes owed by April’s due date. If you request an extension on your 2022 tax return, you will have until Oct. 16 to file.

Taxpayers have an extra three days to file this year because the typical April 15 deadline falls on a weekend and is followed by Washington D.C.’s Emancipation Day on April 17.

WHERE CAN I FILE MY TAXES?

The IRS will let you file for free on their website if your adjusted gross income is less than $73,000. Some of their free tax filing services include:

In Kansas, you can also file on WebFile, but only if you’ve filed a tax return in the state in the last three years.

You can use any tax filing service, such as H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt or TurboTax, to file your taxes. These services may ask you to pay to file your taxes.

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY TAX REFUND?

According to the IRS’s website, you could get your tax refund within 21 days if you do the following:

  • Electronically file your 2022 tax return

  • Request to receive your refund in a direct deposit

  • File your 2022 tax return with no errors or issues

HOW CAN I FIND MY REFUND STATUS?

Check the status of your federal refund 24 hours after filing online with your social security number, filing status and refund amount on your 2022 tax return. Taxpayers who file a paper return should wait at least six months before checking their refund status.

You can also check your state refund status by entering your social security number, filing status and refund amount on these websites:

The refund status for federal and state tax refunds are updated daily. If you don’t see information about your refund, try again on the following day.

SHOULD I FILE MY 2023 TAXES IF I’M WAITING ON PREVIOUS TAX RETURNS?

Taxpayers should file their 2022 tax returns even if they’re waiting on previous returns. According to the IRS, error-free paper and electronic tax returns turned in before November have been processed, but there’s still work to be done.

“This work will not impact tax refund timing for people filing in 2023,” the IRS wrote on its website. “But the IRS continues to urge people to make sure they submit an error-free tax return this tax season to avoid delays.”

Information on the status of tax returns filed in 2022 is on the IRS’ website.
