Our Favorite Hair and Makeup Looks at the 2020 Emmy Awards

Though the 72nd Emmy Awards didn't have the full glam red carpet event we are used to, our favorite stars managed to adapt to the virtual production. Rather than strutting down the red carpet, celebrities were safe and comfortable at home, wearing everything from full-length gowns to their chicest loungewear.

Despite the new virtual structure, the show was incredibly satisfying. HBO's retelling of the comic book series Watchmen lead the way with 26 nominations (it won Best Limited Series, plus stars Regina King and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, in the category) while tongue-in-cheek comedy series Schitt's Creek had a total of 15 (and completely swept, winning every comedy prize on Sunday night). Other winners included Uzo Aduba, Zendaya, Mark Ruffalo, and RuPaul — but everyone who showed up on screen looked positively delightful. These were our favorite looks of the whole night.

Zendaya

Weeks before the show, Zendaya let us know she'd be dressing up for the virtual event — and she didn't disappoint. The actor was one of the first to show off her whole look for the night, keeping it classic and cute with a sleek low bun and very soft, neutral makeup. She looks absolutely radiant in this neutral glam look paired with the eggplant-colored gown created by Christopher John Rogers

Insecure's star Issa Rae didn't letting the pandemic stop her from getting glam for Sunday night's event. On her Instagram stories, the actor gave us a tease of her smoky rose gold eye makeup, which was put together by makeup artist Joanna Simkin. Her lashes that look out of this world are thanks to falsies brand, Eyelure

Rachel Brosnahan

You can truly never go wrong with a black cat eye, and Rachel Brosnahan shows exactly why it works. The rest of her makeup is quite simple with a flawless base and light pink lipstick. Her tousled waves complete the full subdued look.

H.E.R

Jewels are the star of H.E.R's look tonight. The singer's curls were slicked back into a long, waist-length braid that was bedazzled to the gods. And, of course, her edges were swooped to perfection.

Yvonne Orji

The raised fist shaved into Yvonne Orji's buzzcut is making as much of a statement as her bold burgundy lip. The fist design, which was created by Atlanta-based barber Mickey West-Potts, serves as a political statement in response to the many incidents of police brutality that have occurred. She has been slaying this short haircut for a few months now, and we are excited to see what other designs she has cut into her hair.

Reese Witherspoon

There's just something about the bright orange-y red lip that Reese Witherspoon is wearing that just catches our eyes. To create the statement lip, makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan applied Pat McGrath MatteTrance Lipstick in Elson 2 on top of the Permagel Ultra Lip Pencil in Major. The Little Fires actor paired the bold lip with side-parted, soft vintage waves for a look that's so effortless and glam, we can't stop looking.

Tracee Ellis Ross

Tracee Ellis Ross created her own red carpet tonight, and she looks absolutely incredible on it in a metallic, green, frilled gown from Alexandre Vauthier. The Black-ish actor's makeup is simple — except for that violet matte lip. She slicked back her voluminous curls into a bun using products from her hair-care line, Pattern Beauty.

Regina King

Regina King's purple smoky eye is an ode to the '70s, according to makeup artist Tym Buacharern. To create the look, he used a mix of purple hues, starting with a lighter lavender in the inner corners before darkening it up towards the outer corners. A nude gloss and top knot finish off the violet look.

Kerry Washington

Our hairstylist friends have predicted that short cuts will be a huge trend for this fall, and Kerry Washington shows us just how to rock one. This bob paired with her beaded Dolce & Gabbana dress is giving us all the ‘20s vibes — and we’re living for that retro cat eye.

Yara Shahidi

Yara Shahidi shows us she can do no wrong in a custom Prada gown and medium-length cornrows. On each side of her head, two tendrils of hair are styled into small loops to decorate her hairline. The actor looks radiant and dewy with her light, natural makeup.

Oprah

America's favorite talk show host is giving us more than just words of wisdom this year. Oprah looks gorgeous with a deep berry lipstick and minimal makeup. Plus, her hair is full of volume that we are 100 percent envious of.
