Fatal rush hour crash kills 2, closes northbound U.S. 69 near I-435 in Johnson County

Editors note: Overland Park police identified the victims of Thursday morning’s crash as 26-year-old Marquan Wilson, who was the driver, and his passenger, 44-year-old Amie Wood. Both were from Kansas City.

A fatal crash during Thursday morning’s rush hour killed two people and closed northbound U.S. 69 highway near Interstate 435 in Overland Park, a police spokesman said.

The crash involving two vehicles occurred about 7:45 a.m. along northbound U.S. 69 at West 103rd Street, said Officer John Lacy, a spokesman for the Overland Park Police Department.

One of the vehicles “made an aggressive lane change” striking the other vehicle, Lacy said. After the impact, the vehicle careened into the concrete barrier.

“That’s where the vehicle began to flip several times according to witnesses,” Lacy said. “The driver and also the passenger were ejected from the vehicle and were pronounced deceased on scene.”

Police interviewed the other driver involved, as well as took photos of the damage the crash caused to his vehicle. He along with several witnesses have since been released from the scene, Lacy said.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area while police investigated the crash.

Kansas City Scout traffic showed northbound U.S. 69 traffic backed up beyond College Boulevard during the morning rush hour. The crash was also affecting southbound U.S. 69 traffic.
