Eastern Kentucky coach Walt Wells stable after cardiac episode
Eastern Kentucky coach Walt Wells is in stable condition at a local hospital after he had a cardiac episode at his team's facility Sunday morning, the school announced.
Wells, the school said, is at the intensive care unit at the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington. Specifics surrounding the cardiac episode or Wells’ condition are not yet known, though both university president David McFaddin and athletic director Matt Roan spent the afternoon with Wells and his wife at the hospital.

“On behalf of the Wells family, we are very thankful for the amazing medical professionals who have been involved,” Roan said in the statement. "We ask for everyone to continue lifting up Coach Wells and his family during this time. We join everyone in hoping for a full recovery for Coach Wells.”
Wells is set to enter his third season with the Colonels this fall. He holds a 10-10 overall record there, and is fresh off a 7-4 season. It marks Wells’ third stint at Eastern Kentucky, following two runs as an assistant there starting in 1997. He returned to the school before the 2020 season after working as an assistant at Tennessee and Kentucky.
Eastern Kentucky is set to open its season Friday against Eastern Michigan. It’s unclear if Wells will be able to coach, or when he will return.
