Dramatic video shows fair ride plunging into ground, tossing riders into air in India
A spinning carnival ride plunged about 50 feet and crashed into the ground with riders on board, video from India shows.
The drop-tower ride hit the ground without slowing down, video posted to Twitter by journalist Nikhil Choudhary on Sunday, Sept. 4 shows. It has more than 6 million views since being posted.
The impact caused a large cracking sound and threw riders into the air, video shared by the Economic Times shows. People yelled and screamed; bystanders nearby ran away from the ride.
The ride fell about 50 feet before hitting the ground, according to the Press Trust of India.
Multiple riders were injured but reports conflicted as to how many. The Times of India and Times Now reported 10 people were injured while NDTV and NBC News Today reported 16 injured.
The Times of India reported people suffered injuries to the spine, nose, and jaw, citing medical professionals.
The incident took place at a carnival in Mohali, Punjab, a northern state in India, NDTV reported.
A fair organizer told The Times of India that, “it seems to be a technical snag. We have been organizing fairs at many places, but such an incident has never happened.”
Police in Punjab registered a case against the fair organizers on Monday, Sept. 5 citing them for endangering the safety of others and negligence, among other citations, Press Trust of India reported.
Mohali is about 155 miles north of New Delhi.
