New Details Emerge From Mets Trade For Pitcher Rich Hill

The New York Mets struck a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday that will hopefully bolster their rotation the rest of this season.

The Mets have acquired left-hander Rich Hill from the Rays. New York, meanwhile, is sending reliever Tommy Hunter and minor league catcher Matt Dyer to Tampa, per baseball insider Jeff Passan.

“Reliever Tommy Hunter and AA catcher Matt Dyer are headed back to the Rays for Rich Hill, sources confirm to ESPN,” Passan reported via Twitter.

The veteran Hill is 6-4 in 19 starts this season. He has a 3.87 ERA with 91 strikeouts. The Mets are hoping he can be a reliable arm down the stretch of the regular season.

The Mets currently sit atop the NL East at 50-43, but they don’t have much breathing room. Just six games seperate the Mets and the fourth-place Nationals. The Braves and Phillies, meanwhile, are each four games back.

The Mets are more than capable of making a run this postseason, but health will play a factor – particularly in their rotation. That’s why the acquisition of Rich Hill could prove pivotal. He’s a veteran arm that’s been healthy this season. The Mets could find a big role for him in coming weeks.

The Rays, meanwhile, have been busy ahead of next week’s trade deadline. They acquired Nelson Cruz from the Minnesota Twins on Thursday and dealt Hill to the Mets on Friday.
