Derek Carr says Colin Kaepernick would ‘get along great’ with Raiders
Derek Carr would welcome Colin Kaepernick into the Las Vegas Raiders’ locker room with open arms.
Carr, speaking after the Raiders’ first mandatory minicamp practice Tuesday, said Kaepernick would be a great fit following his workout with the team last month.
"I don't want to speak for everybody in that kind of sense — I don't want someone mad at me for saying, 'I think it would be great,' — but I know him and I would get along great," Carr said, via ESPN. "I know we have in the past, and I think we would again. I think for the most part, I think he'd get along great with our guys."
Kaepernick had a nearly five-hour workout with the Raiders last month, which marks his first and only official workout since he was essentially blackballed from the NFL after he started protesting during the national anthem in 2016.
Sources told Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson that the workout went well, and that Kaepernick was in “great” shape.
“It was a very normal workout,” one source told Yahoo Sports last month. “It was just about assessing a football player, meeting face to face, seeing the physical capabilities. Like any other football workout.”
It’s unclear if the Raiders are going to make a move to actually sign Kaepernick.
Carr is set to enter his ninth season with the franchise this fall. He signed a three-year, $121.5 million extension in April, too. The Raiders also have quarterbacks Jarrett Stidham, Nick Mullens and Chase Garbers on their roster.
Carr and Kaepernick briefly competed against each other in college. Carr played four seasons at Fresno State before the Raiders took him in the second round of the 2014 draft. Kaepernick also played in the WAC at Nevada from 2007-2010 before the San Francisco 49ers drafted him in 2011.
Carr’s older brother, David, played for the 49ers briefly just before Kaepernick was drafted, and has told him that “he’s awesome.”
"I remember our days back then, and just watching him and what he did in college and getting to know him and talking to him on the phone," Carr said, via ESPN. "I've told you guys, I've loved my time with him. I think he's a great guy. He's been great to be around. I've enjoyed being around him, talking with him, competing against him."
