Deputy injured during shooting at senior health facility in Bradenton, suspect in custody: MCSO

BRADENTON, Fla. - A deputy is recovering after being shot in the arm early on Friday morning, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says they responded to Aspire at Palma Sola Bay, a senior health care facility located at 6305 Cortez Rd W. after an employee called the Bradenton Police Department around 3:30 a.m.

The employee told law enforcement that a driver crashed into the front of the building and got out of the car and loaded a handgun, according to Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells during a press conference on Friday.

After seeing the gun, the sheriff says she ran back inside and a male employee approached the suspect, later identified as Sean Francis Calcutti.

Calcutti fired a shot at the male employee and missed, according to officials. Authorities say the employee was able to go back inside the building and lock the doors behind him.

Deputies say there were about 90 patients inside the facility but no patients or staff were hurt during the shooting.

According to the sheriff's office, Calcutti tried several doors before firing a round into a window.

"So they [deputies] start to actively search for this dirtbag. They locate him on the east side of this building. It's dark. They can't see real well," shared Wells. "They know he's armed, but they can't see the gun in his hand. They don't know if he still has a weapon. They give him commands to show his hands to get down."

Calcutti didn't follow the commands and started shooting at deputies and deputies returned fire, according to the sheriff.

"One of my deputies was struck in his left arm…The suspect then runs from the scene," said Wells.

Officials say officers from the Bradenton Police Department, Palmetto Police Department, and Holmes Police Department set up a perimeter to catch Calcutti.

He was found around 5:44 a.m. and when deputies took Calcutti into custody, he was "whining and screaming like a little baby," according to the sheriff.

The sheriff's office says a handgun dropped out of Calcutti's shorts as deputies were trying to arrest him.

He was not shot or injured, but he was taken to a hospital, according to MCSO.

"This is a man that tried to kill one of my deputies. This is a man who tried to kill an innocent civilian inside this nursing home. And this is the man who will hopefully spend a lot of time not only in the Wells Motel, which is the Manatee County jail, but also the Department of Corrections," shared Wells.

Investigators don't believe the suspect had any connection to the nursing home, and they have not found any relatives or friends he knows yet.

"Why he chose to crash into this nursing home, we do not know why he chose to shoot at these innocent civilians, we do not know. We're investigating that now and why he made the decision to shoot one of my deputies, I can only guess," said Wells.

Authorities say the deputy who was shot was taken to a local hospital and is expected to be released on Friday night.

"I go through a lot of emotions. So, in the beginning, it's just concern and worry over the condition of my deputy. Then, once I realized that he was going to be okay, then there's joy and relief. And then from that point, I go right into what I would call redneck anger, where I'm absolutely pissed off at what this scumbag has done," explained Wells.

Sheriff Wells says Calcutti will be charged with attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, attempted murder on civilians, shooting into an occupied dwelling and armed burglary.
