Get your daily dose of awe at Centre Hall’s Rhoneymeade Arboretum and Sculpture Garden

Did you know that experiencing a sense of “awe” is a proven way to give your health and happiness a boost? Observing the wonders of art and nature are two of the few ways to get a daily dose of awe, and those who live in central Pennsylvania are very fortunate to live in a region with a great deal of both. Fortunately you don’t need to visit the Grand Canyon to experience awe — simply admiring a flower or strolling through a local art gallery can elicit “a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder,” as the word awe is defined.

This week, on Sunday, July 3, and Wednesday, July 6, Centred Outdoors will invite participants to experience awe-inspiring moments by slowing down to admire art and nature during guided hikes, walks, and wellness activities at Rhoneymeade in Centre Hall.

On Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m. take a free guided tour throughout the grounds of Rhoneymeade Arboretum and Sculpture Garden during an approximately 2-mile guided hike. The 150-acre working farm was once the historic homestead of Grange Fair founder Leonard Rhone, and was also the first property to be permanently conserved by ClearWater Conservancy when then-owner Dr. Richard Morgan finalized an easement on the land in 1986. Visitors will find awe in the natural beauty and features here during a moderately challenging hike along the public hiking trail, through a wooded Labyrinth Loop, and past many other memorable and historic features here.

In addition to guided hikes on Sunday, Stephanie Koller with The Weather Vein will also lead and facilitate wellness activities. Join Stephanie for Qi-Yoga at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to enhance your mindfulness and mood (all abilities welcome). Other nature-inspired self-guided activities throughout the day will help you reflect on the tiny but awe-inspiring wonders of nature. Try nature weaving with natural materials, leaf rubbing, and making a nature mandala before or after the guided hike and yoga sessions.

Then on Wednesday at 6 p.m. participants can tour the six-acre gardens and other areas around the Leonard Rhone House during a shorter, half mile guided walk. Explore and admire the sculpture garden, native and pollinator-friendly plants, and a wide variety of trees in the arboretum as a guide shares information about this historic homestead that earned its spot on the National Register for Historic Places in 1985.

There is plenty to do and see at Rhoneymeade, a truly one-of-a-kind destination waiting to inspire you and any friends of family members that come along for the adventure. Allow plenty of time for your day trip and consider packing a picnic, binoculars, book, or journal so you can take your time to admire the natural and artistic features, both big and small.
