Crestwood Local superintendent chosen for top spot in Orrville City Schools

The head of Crestwood Local School in Mantua will lead the Orrville District starting Aug. 1.

The Orrville City Schools Board of Education selected Dr. David Toth as the district's new superintendent, marking a new chapter in the educational journey of Orrville.

The board unanimously voted in favor of Toth during a special school board meeting March 7.

Residing in Solon with his wife, Lori, and four daughters, Toth conveyed his enthusiasm for Orrville's educational landscape.

“Orrville has a lot of resources for students and kids in the community. When I researched the district, I was super excited,” he said.

His priority goal is to learn more about the community and build relationships.

“As a new person coming, I’ll learn more about the staff, students, then look at the strengths and what I can work on,” he said.

He is passionate about students, student learning and student success, and is looking forward to bringing that passion to Orrville.

“Throughout my time in teaching and administration, I've seen the transformational effect of a solid educational foundation," Toth said. "My aim for our district is to always work toward the goal that every student feels respected, supported, and empowered to fulfill their greatest potential.”

Toth will take over for interim Superintendent Brett Lanz, who was appointed after Jon Ritchie resigned last year.

Tooth's experience and education stood out

The school received 16 applicants after posting the position in late December. In addition, they conducted surveys and focus groups with the help of the Ohio Schools Board Association to get input from parents and teachers.

After narrowing it down, Toth experience and dedication to education were key factors that made him stand out from the other applicants.

“We are excited about Dr. Toth he has a great educational background, starting in special education as a teacher and then moving into administration,” board President Pat Lorson said.

Toth earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Dayton, followed by a master's degree from the University of Akron and a Ph.D. from Youngstown State University.

He began his career as a special education teacher, then served in several administration roles including assistant principal, principal and finally superintendent for Crestwood Local Schools where he spent 11 years.

The three-year contract begins Aug. 1. However, Toth plans to visit the schools, attend board meetings and coordinate the transition with Lanz.

Toth attended literacy night at the Orrville Elementary School and had a tour of all the buildings.

“With his diverse and strong background, we believe he’s the right person for us as a superintendent at this point,” Lorson said.
