Early morning crash involving a police officer kills a woman, Broward deputies say

A woman was killed in a crash early Sunday morning involving an on-duty Coconut Creek police officer, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Divinity C. Cureton, a Pembroke Pines resident, died at a hospital, BSO said in a news release. The officer, whom BSO declined to name citing a law that protects victims, was treated and released.

Around 4 a.m., authorities learned that the officer crashed near the 4200 block of West Sample Road in Coconut Creek, BSO said. When first responders arrived, they found the officer’s marked Ford Explorer and Cureton’s Toyota Camry. The officer and the 30-year-old woman were taken to the hospital, but she died about an hour after the crash, BSO said.

West Sample Road was shut down from Northwest 42nd Avenue to Lyons Road from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. as detectives investigated the crash.

According to BSO’s preliminary investigation, both drivers were traveling westbound on West Sample Road when the Toyota struck the rear end of the marked police cruiser. As the officer stopped, Cureton’s car struck a palm tree in the center median before ricocheting back to the road, detectives say.

At the request of the Coconut Creek Police Department, BSO says its traffic homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
