Chandler Police shooting ends in suspect's death
CHANDLER, Ariz. - A suspect is dead in Chandler after being shot by police on Wednesday afternoon.
The shooting happened near Chandler Boulevard and McClintock Drive, just north of the Chandler Fashion Center, around 1:30 p.m. on May 8.
Police say officers initially responded to reports of a domestic dispute.
"Upon arrival, the homeowner informed police that a relative who did not live in the home was behaving erratically in their backyard," police said a day after the shooting.
When officers made their way into the backyard, they were reportedly confronted by a suspect who had two large knives. Police say the suspect also made threatening comments.
After officers tried to calm the situation for more than 30 minutes by using deescalation and less lethal devices, the suspect allegedly charged at the officers with the knives and that's when a shooting broke out.
"… we can confirm there were three officers involved in this incident. As per policy, they are now on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation," Chandler Police said.
Medical help was given to the suspect, but he died at the scene. The suspect is identified as 45-year-old Ruben Felix Alejandro Lopez.
No more information was provided.
