Cats, Lady Cats post dual wins over Portales

Mar. 23—Clovis High's tennis teams claimed victories in dual contests against Portales High on Tuesday at the CHS tennis courts, the boys winning 6-3 while the girls posted a 9-0 sweep.

In boys play, the Wildcats went with a roster of junior varsity players against the Rams, who have only four squad members. The Cats claimed forfeit wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles and at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, boys winners were junior Jackson Rossi, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0) at No. 1; freshman Ben Brooks, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2, and junior Xylon Byrd, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at No. 3, while sophomore Conner O'Doherty dropped a 6-0, 6-1 verdict at No. 4.

In doubles, Portales won at No. 1 with a 7-5, 7-5 decision against Rossi and Brooks, and at No. 2 with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Byrd and O'Doherty.

In girls singles, senior Hannah Heath defeated Lady Rams senior Maggie Duong 4-6, 6-4, (10-4) at No. 1; sophomore Gigi Greer won 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) against senior Lorena Fernandez at No. 2; junior Emily Bjorklund downed sophomore Belia Lopez 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3; eighth-grader Stella Greer got the best of sophomore Alejandra Larez 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4; sophomore

Tara Zimmerman won over sophomore Lissette Gomez 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5, and sophomore Leonie Muller topped sophomore Keily Blackwell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.

In doubles, Heath and junior Madita Ewert were 6-2, 6-4 winners over Duong and Fernandez; Gigi Green and Bjorklund bested Lopez-Gomez 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 and Stella Greer and junior Hansini Lingala notched a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Blackwell-Larez at No. 3.

Lady Rams win at Moriarty — The PHS girls registered a 5-4 victory at Moriarty on Thursday, going 4-2 in singles and 1-2 in doubles against the Lady Pintos.

In singles, Duong defeated junior Ziva Goldfein 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1; Hernandez topped junior Meredith Garcia 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2; Lopez lost to sophomore McKenna Hatten 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3; Larez dropped a 6-0, 6-1 verdict to sophomore Addison Springall at No. 4; Gomez topped senior Hannah Davis 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5, and Blackwell posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.

In doubles, Hernandez-Lopez lost 8-4 at No. 1, Duong-Gomez lost 8-6 at No. 2, and Blackwell and junior Susan Mayville were victorious 8-0 at No. 3.

Meantime, Moriarty's boys posted a 9-0 victory over Portales.

Clovis is idle until April 5 when it hosts Roswell High in a non-district dual. Next up for PHS squads are their District 4-4A openers at Artesia on April 2.
