Cam Newton Reacts To What He’s Seeing From Rookie QB Mac Jones

Despite a looming quarterback battle in New England, returning starter Cam Newton has had nothing but good things to say about incoming rookie Mac Jones.

During a training camp press conference on Friday, Newton continued with those positive vibes, using a famous catchphrase of the late-great Stuart Scott to describe the No. 15 overall pick.

“Cool as the other side of the pillow,” the former league MVP said when asked to describe Jones, per Pats insider Ryan Hannable.

When Jones first arrived in New England, Newton noted that he was “pretty quite” as he began to learn the ropes at the NFL level. But now, it seems that reserved demeanor has blossomed into a quite confidence.

Jonnu Smith, another new addition to the Patriots organization, said Jones has already emerged as a leader in the locker room.

“I didn’t expect Mac to have the kind of swagger that he got,” Smith said, per ProFootballTalk. “Mac, hell of a guy, great energy, just bringing life to the locker room. Always laughing. Smile on his face. Loves football. You can’t ask for a better quarterback.”

While Newton could feel threatened by the Jones’ quickly growing presence in the New England franchise, the veteran QB has instead embraced the young talent. When asked if he was upset about the No. 15 overall selection of the Alabama standout earlier this offseason, Newton acknowledged that it was the “right pick” for the team to make.

For now, Newton is expected to be the Patriots’ Week 1 starter.

That could soon change with a breakout performance from Jones in his first NFL training camp.
