Cal Poly football announces 2023 schedule — with 6 home games

Cal Poly football announced its 2023 schedule, with six of the Mustangs’ 11 games taking place at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

It’s the first time in five years that the Mustangs have had the majority of their games at home.

The team will open up the season in San Luis Obispo against the University of San Diego on Sept. 2.

Following the matchup with the Toreros, the Mustangs travel to San Jose State on Sept. 9 as their only FBS opponent before hosting Division 2 Lincoln of Oakland on Sept. 16.

The Mustangs open Big Sky Conference play at Portland State on Sept. 23 before hosting UC Davis in the Golden Horseshoe rivalry game on Sept. 30.

The rest of the conference schedule features Idaho, Montana State, Northern Colorado, Eastern Washington, Sacramento State and Weber State.

Idaho (Oct. 7), Northern Colorado (Oct. 21) and Weber State (Nov. 18) are the other three home games.

In the Mustangs’ 12th season in the Big Sky Conference, the team will not play Northern Arizona, Idaho State and Montana.

Cal Poly football looks to improve on 2-9 season

Last fall, the Mustangs finished 2-9 overall and 1-7 in conference. Their sole Big Sky win came in 49-42 shootout against Portland State in the last game of the season.

It’s been an up-and-down offseason for Cal Poly. On Dec. 2, the program announced the resignation of former head coach Beau Baldwin, who took a job at Arizona State as offensive coordinator.

Four days later Cal Poly promoted associate head coach Paul Wulff to head coach. On Jan. 18, Cal Poly brought in Sheldon Cross from Kennedy Catholic in Washington to serve as offensive coordinator.

Following Cross’s hiring, former five-star quarterback and University of Washington transfer Sam Huard committed to play for the Mustangs and will enroll in the spring. He’s believed to be the first five-star recruit in the program’s history. Cross coached Huard at Kennedy before he enrolled at Washington.

The Mustangs also added former four-stars linebacker Ethan Calvert from Utah along with San Luis Obispo high school alumni and UCLA transfer offensive linemen Thomas Cole.

“As always, the Big Sky schedule is extremely tough but one that we will be ready for,” Wulff said. “We welcome the challenge. This will be a fun and exciting season for our players and program.”
