Burr made money on ‘well-timed’ stock deal + First look at revamped South End office

Hello, everyone! KJ here. In my opinion, nothing beats a good bacon, egg & cheese sandwich. I’d even argue it’s better than a BLT. (Feel free to disagree.)

CharlotteFive published its list of the best places to find the delicious sandwich, according to you. I don’t have a favorite (yet), but I may have to try each one and see for myself.

Food aside, here’s your news of the day. Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday!

1. Richard Burr avoided loss, made money on ‘well-timed’ stock deal, court records show

Court records released today reveal that Sen. Richard Burr avoided an estimated $87,000 in losses and gained more than $164,000 due to his “well-timed” stock sales at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Department of Justice began their investigation of Burr in May 2020 after he sold more than $1.6 million in stocks at the beginning of the pandemic.

The new documents reveal that investigators believe Burr, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law may have sold off stocks based on nonpublic information Burr received in February 2020 as the pandemic was rising in the United States.

2. Here’s a first look at this revamped South End office building that’s adding a restaurant

A revamped six-story office building just off the Light Rail’s Blue Line Carson station will feature 10,000 square feet of new restaurant space.

The Offices at Carson Station at 1001 Morehead Square Drive (the building is formerly known as Morehead Square) is under construction for updates to both the exterior and interior. Last year, the South End space sold for $65 million.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Spectrum is managing the building and handling leasing.

3. Driver pleads guilty for role in fiery crash that killed 6-year-old in Gaston County

One of two drivers charged in the fiery crash that killed six-year-old Liam Lagunas last year will spend at least three and a half years in prison after pleading guilty for her role in the tragedy.

Last June, Gracie Eaves was racing Donnie Ray Cobb at 100 mph before Cobb lost control of his Audi and slammed head-on into a car carrying Liam and his father, police say.

“I’m really sorry,” Eaves said in a Gaston County courtroom today. “If I could take this back, I would. I just wish someday down the road (Liam’s family) will let me reach out to apologize more.”

4. For Panthers rookie OT Ikem Ekwonu, it won’t get much harder than Week 1

The Panthers are banking on rookie first-round pick Ikem Ekwonu to stabilize their offensive line and protect Baker Mayfield this season.

But his introduction to the NFL may be a rocky one. Ekwonu’s assignment on Sunday: Perennial All-Pro and former first overall pick Myles Garrett.

“I’m diving in head-first,” Ekwonu said Monday with a smile. “...I’ve been going against a Pro Bowler already every day in training camp... Shout-out to Brian Burns.”

Scott Fowler has a look-ahead before Sunday’s season-opener against the Cleveland Browns.
