Brush fire leads to road closure in Daytona Beach: Sheriff's Office

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A brush fire in Volusia County was under control Thursday night, although fire crews with the Florida Forest Service will continue working the fire overnight.

The fire started in the afternoon hours in a wooded area west of Williamson Blvd., between Beville Rd. and Madeline Ave. Williamson Blvd. was shut down for several hours due to limited visibility. [GMap]

At around 9 p.m., the fire was 40 acres in size and 20% contained.

At one point, the fire crossed the road and burned brush on the east side of Williamson Boulevard, but crews from the Port Orange and Daytona Beach fire departments quickly extinguished the flames.

Although the cause of the fire is still unknown, Daytona Beach Fire Deputy Chief Jessica Matthews says firefighters found an encampment in the wooded area where the fire was located. No one was present when firefighters arrived.

Residents and drivers can expect to see smoke in the area for the next few days and small flames in the wood line.
