Billie Eilish Compared "Bad Guy" to the "Wizards of Waverly Place" Theme Song

Everything is not what it seems. Duh.

Billie Eilish’s hit song “bad guy” is now nominated for several Grammys, but one part of the song actually has a very familiar reference point: Wizards of Waverly Place.

The song, which came out in March 2019, earned a no. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 (unseating “Old Town Road”’s record-breaking weeks-long reign); over the course of the year, fans on Twitter and Reddit noticed that the synth hook in the recording sounds a lot like the theme song for Selena Gomez’s Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place, which ran from 2007-2012.

Now, Billie herself has acknowledged the similarity. In a video for Rolling Stone, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas shared how “bad guy” came together and touched upon the show when they talked about the post-chorus. “And you know what it literally is?” Billie told Finneas. “It’s not at all the same melodies but it’s literally Plants vs. Zombies... and Wizards of Waverly Place.” In the video, she even sings part of the theme song, so she’s clearly a true fan.

Honestly, we love the reference, whether it was intentional or accidental, and it makes sense, since the two were growing up when Wizards was still on the air. The pair also revealed other interesting factoids about how the song was made, including that it took 34 takes for Billie to get the right “duh” at the end of the chorus. Oh and the 13-second-long intro to the album — in which Billie and Finneas announce that she has removed her Invisalign and therefore the album can begin — was originally part of “bad guy,” but Billie figured no one would listen to the song if they had to hear that intro every time, so it was made into a separate track. The more you know!

Billie and Finneas wrote and produced the entirety of Billie’s debut album together, and just last month, they racked up a total of 11 Grammy nominations between the two of them; six for Billie and five for Finneas. Billie is the youngest artist to ever be nominated for all four major categories at the Grammys: Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. She’s also nominated for Pop Solo Performance for “bad guy” and Pop Vocal Album for When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?.

Clearly, the song is a hit — so it looks like all those “duhs” and time spent watching Wizards were worth it. Check out the video over on Rolling Stone.
