Obsessed with fried chicken?

If you’re from the South, you likely at least have an appreciation for it. For many South Carolinians, properly-made fried chicken is a point of pride.

It’s also quite the popular dish. You’d be hard-pressed to travel anywhere in the state and not find restaurants serving it.

If you love fried chicken and want to find the best there is in the Palmetto State though, Yelp can guide you.

Yelp recently compiled a list of the best fried chicken places in each state. To find the best fried chicken, Yelp identified businesses in its restaurant and food categories with large concentrations of reviews mentioning fried chicken. It then ranked those spots using several factors, including the total volume of ratings of reviews. Also, every restaurant listed had a passing health score as of Wednesday.

So, which South Carolina spot currently has the best fried chicken?

Yelp’s data shows that Angel Oak Restaurant currently serves the best fried chicken in the Palmetto State.

At the restaurant, located at 3669 Savannah Hwy Johns Island, customers can order a two-piece fried chicken meal for lunch that’s drizzled in honey, along with two sides, such as macaroni and cheese and loaded potato salad.

“I had the chicken, which came with Mac and cheese and they subbed green beans for the collards--the chicken was fantastic: crispy on the outside and very tender and juicy on the inside,” wrote Yelp user Erma R.

Another Yelp user, Steven J., wrote, ”Fried chicken was outstanding. I think the batter might even have a touch of cinnamon. It was very unique and totally delicious.”

According to the restaurant’s website, Jay and Nicole Kees moved from New York to open Angel Oak Restaurant. Nicole grew up in the Hudson Valley region and worked at many restaurants while earning her Master’s degree in art education.

Jay was born and raised in Mississippi and started working in restaurants at a young age. He later obtained a Bachelor’s Degree at the Culinary Institute of America.
