New arts group brings big theater production to outdoor stage in Richland

The HAPO Stage at John Dam Plaza in Richland is being transformed into an outdoor musical theater for a few days this month.

Debut performances of “The Music Man” are at 7 p.m. on Aug. 16, 18, 23, 24 and 25, presented by Yes& Productions, a new arts production company based in Kennewick.

“Essentially, ‘The Music Man’ is about the power of inviting people to join and including them, and what happens when people connect,” said artistic director Megan Johnson. “Even non-theater people love this show.”

Johnson has lived in the Tri-Cities for 17 years, calling Richland home. She told the Herald that there was a desire for a “big, bold first show.”

“The Music Man” includes 43 local cast members, 12 principal dancers from the Mid-Columbia Ballet, a 17-piece orchestra and a crew of 10. The cast includes people of all ages, starting as young as 8.

Yes& Productions started in January 2024, led by Johnson and executive director Jill Madison. Johnson also is an adjunct director at Hanford High, part of a team of directors for the school’s theater program.

“Art is such a beautiful thing in any community. It’s something that brings people together,” Johnson said. “We love to see ourselves on stage and come together, laugh together, celebrate and tell stories that have been told a million times before. That connects to something deep within us.”
