Arlington to spray for mosquitoes after city confirms positive case of West Nile virus

Arlington is conducting targeted ground spraying Tuesday and Wednesday to prevent the spread of West Nile virus after the city confirmed one positive case, according to a news release.

The ground spraying will be started in the area of Caliente Drive and Commander Court, in southwest Arlington.

A water-based permethrin product is being sprayed in the area because larvicide and other measures haven’t been effective, according to the news release. The city has been conducting measures to reduce the mosquito population, like deploying larvicide, since the start of mosquito season.

Crews conducting these efforts have noted low-lying areas with standing water that are potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes, according to the release.

The city says the treatment is not known to have any negative impacts on people, pets or the environment. If you or a pet have chemical sensitivity or asthma, the city recommends staying indoors for the night.

You can prevent mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and pants, draining standing water in your yards where mosquitoes could breed and applying bug spray with the ingredient DEET.
