Aptera’s three-wheeled electric car doesn’t need to be charged
The U.S. startup Aptera Motors has launched the Aptera 3, a three-wheeled solar-powered electric vehicle (sEV).
What’s particularly unique about the Aptera 3 is that it requires no daily charging for most daily use and has more mileage than other sEVs with 1,000 miles per charge.
“With Aptera’s Never Charge technology, you are driven by the power of the sun. Our built-in solar array keeps your battery pack topped off and anywhere you want to go, you just go,” co-founder Chris Anthony said in a statement. “The Aptera vehicle is made of lightweight composites that are many times stronger than steel, allowing its unique body shape to slip through the air.”
The two-seater — which looks like a sleek, three-wheeled spaceship with serious ’80s Nightrider vibes — is designed to soak up enough sun to travel 11,000 miles annually. It can absorb five miles of range per hour making for a range of about 40 to 45 miles on a sunny day.
“Forty miles doesn’t sound like a lot, but it’s the equivalent of parking your car and having it magically fill up with two gallons of gas overnight,” the company stated. “It’s the fact that you can park it at work or wherever and go back to it with more energy in the tank than when you left it.”
The Aptera 3 is available in front-wheel drive with one electric motor, which can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds and in three-wheel drive with three motors, which can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds.
Aptera Motors is currently taking orders for the sEV which is priced at $25,900 to $46,900 depending on the model.
