'American Idol' auditions are coming up. Here's how you can try out in your home state

Do you have what it takes to become the next "American Idol"? Well, there's only one way to find out.

The hit singing competition returns to ABC for its sixth season on the network and 21st season overall in Spring 2023 — which means it's time to start warming up your singing voice and preparing your audition so you can seize your shot at becoming the show's next superstar.

Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan are all set to return for the new season, as well as host Ryan Seacrest.

Auditions for the new season of "Idol" begin Aug. 3 via "Idol Across America," a "live virtual nationwide search for the next superstar," according to a Thursday news release.

Hopefuls who sign up for "Idol Across America" online will sing virtually for an "Idol" producer for a shot to go on and sing for the judges onscreen and hopefully earn a golden ticket to Hollywood.

"Idol Across America" auditions are held throughout August, with audition dates assigned based on home state. The virtual tour kicks off Aug. 3 with the First 500 event, where singers can sign up for a VIP audition spot before the rest of the competition.

Who won 'American Idol' last season?

Last season ended with Kentucky construction worker Noah Thompson covered in confetti after being announced as the winner of "American Idol."

Shortly after his victory, Thompson, 20, told USA TODAY he almost didn't audition. He wound up on "Idol" against his wishes, when his work friend Arthur signed him up without telling him.

"I just got shoved into this competition basically by my buddy, but I'm grateful for it," he said. "I just didn't expect this outcome at all. After Top 3 was when it really hit me."
