High school football is back!

Games begin Thursday night when St. Vincent-St. Mary plays host to Cleveland Glenville, and the race to a playoff berth and the ultimate goal of a state championship will kick off.

Archbishop Hoban will again be among the favorites to claim a state championship in Division II and programs such as Green, Walsh Jesuit, Stow, Nordonia, Norton, Barberton, Hudson and Highland will be looking to build upon the success they enjoyed in 2021.

There are new coaches and new players to keep an eye on as the season gets under way. The Beacon Journal has previewed the 25 Summit County schools, along with Suburban League members Highland and Wadsworth, and has identified the top players to watch at each position.

Once again, the Beacon Journal's high school sports staff will take a stab at predicting the outcomes of the all the games involving its 27 core schools.

Here is the schedule for Week 1 and the predictions of high school writers, Michael Beaven (the defending champion), Brad Bournival, Michael Leonard and Sports Editor Scot Fagerstrom. Let the games begin!
