Aaron Rodgers Reveals If He Actually Considered Retirement
Aaron Rodgers stepped in front of a microphone on Wednesday on the second day of Green Bay Packers training camp and delivered a blistering, yet honest account of his dispute with the organization over the last few months.
The 2020 MVP spoke candidly, and at length, about why he was so frustrated with his longtime franchise and what some of the factors were that led him to escalate the situation this summer. He also addressed whether or not he actually considered retiring in the midst of the chaos.
That particular topic had plenty of truth to it, according to Rodgers. The 37-year-old quarterback confirmed that stepping away from football all together was one of the options that ran through his mind this offseason.
“It was definitely something I thought about,” Rodgers replied when asked if he thought about retirement. However, he followed up that response by saying that his “fire still burns” to play football.

Considering what Rodgers was able to do in his late 30s with the Packers in 2020, retirement would’ve been a shocking route to take. He completed 70.7 percent of his passes for 4,299 yards, 48 touchdowns and a mere five interceptions last season on his way to winning the league MVP.
However, Rodgers found plenty of enjoyment outside of football this summer. He had a guest hosting gig on Jeopardy! and spent plenty of time with his new fiancée, showing maybe that he didn’t need the Packers as much as they needed him.
Nevertheless, it would’ve bizarre to watch a reigning MVP walk off into the sunset. A reconciliation with the Packers seemed to be the best path forward for Rodgers to continue his pursuit of a second Lombardi Trophy.
The 37-year-old quarterback unloaded plenty of other information in Wednesday’s media session, which will likely make for a strange dynamic this season. Rodgers clearly heard enough of what he wanted to hear to return to Green Bay this fall, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see things go south at any moment.
On the other hand, the Packers roster remains one of the strongest in the league. With Rodgers back under center, Green Bay could just as easily be a Super Bowl contender come February.
