For the first time in nearly a year, six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has landed on an NFL roster. The 33-year-old agreed to a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday afternoon, according to an announcement from the team.

McCoy, a former No. 3 overall pick, will make his return to the league after spending time with the Dallas Cowboys last year. However, he ruptured a quadriceps muscle in early August of 2020 and was released by the team soon after. Since then, he’s been an unsigned free agent.

McCoy might be 33, but he’s just a few seasons removed from a productive 2019 campaign with the Carolina Panthers. He’ll still need to compete for a spot on the Raiders, but at the bare minimum he can provide depth to Jon Gruden’s defensive front.

In the mid 2010’s, McCoy was one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL. He made the Pro Bowl in six straight seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who drafted him with the No. 3 pick in the 2010 draft. He was also named a first-team All-Pro in three consecutive years from 2012 to 2014.

McCoy saw his production took a small dip in his final two years with the Buccaneers, so he landed on the Panthers in 2019. He bounced back in a major way and had earned himself with a three year deal with the Cowboys before the quad injury.

Headed into his stint with the Raiders, McCoy has racked up 334 career tackles and 59.5 career sacks in 139 games.

McCoy will likely see his career end in the near future, but clearly he’s not willing to give in just yet. Time will tell what he’s able to give the Raiders in preseason and if he can carve out a spot for himself on the team’s depth chart.
