A Lawrence, Kansas, police K-9 handler and his partner Shadow found roughly 33 pounds of methamphetamine and 1.26 pounds of cocaine in luggage at a transportation facility.

The bust has a street value between $500,000 to $750,000, according to Lawrence Police Department spokesperson Laura McCabe.

“Unsurprisingly, no one claimed the luggage in question,” LPD said in a Facebook post. “No one has been taken into custody, but investigators are working diligently to identify the owner. The investigation remains ongoing.”

It was found Wednesday night at a local transportation facility while Shadow and his handler were doing a routine security sweep and the Belgian Malinois “indicated to the presence of illegal drugs in a piece of luggage,” according to police.

McCabe said they would not identify the “facility yet as the case is still under investigation.”

“We do proactively do luggage checks at transportation facilities and mail facilities in Lawrence,” she said in an email.

McCabe did not respond when asked where the drugs were coming from or going to.

The drugs will be sent to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to check if they contain fentanyl.

The Lawrence Police Department first announced the addition of Shadow to the department in July 2022 when the dog was 2.
