3-year-old girl shot, killed in Southeast DC neighborhood: police

WASHINGTON - A 3-year-old girl was shot and killed in the District Friday night after gunshots rang out in a Southeast neighborhood.

Near the scene of the crime, the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District Commander, LaShay Makal, stated that the toddler was inside a vehicle when she was struck by bullets.

The young victim was not conscious or breathing when officers showed up at 24th and Irving St. SE just after 9 p.m.

The 3-year-old was flown to a hospital, Commander MaKal said, where she later succumbed to her injuries and died.

Investigators believe the toddler was not the intended target, but was caught in the crossfire.
