Blissy Silk Pillowcase
NBC Select updates editor Mili Godio loves using this silk pillowcase because it’s as helpful for her hair as it is for her skin. “The silk material doesn’t pull or rub at my hair like harder cotton pillowcases do, so I usually wake up with a lot less frizz, making my hair so much more manageable when styling it in the morning,” says Godio.

How to shop for anti-frizz products
When shopping for anti-frizz products, our experts recommend considering the following:
Formulation
When you look at frizzy hair through a microscope, it looks like a Christmas tree, according to Boton. The goal is to fill in the hair with a smoothing product so the frizz is contained, she says.
To control frizz, consider your entire hair care routine. Start with the most effective shampoo and conditioner for your hair type and then add styling products like sprays, gels, creams and more. You can also use hot tools to flatten the cuticle down and then finish with an anti-humidity, anti-frizz product, says Boton.
Below, Dickson shares a few things to keep in mind when shopping for stylers.
Creams are better for people with thicker or wavy/curly hair.
Serums are great for adding moisture and shine but can sometimes be greasy.
Sprays tend to be lighter and easier to apply without the worry of messes, making them especially beneficial for people with fine hair.
It’s easy to go overboard with gels and mousses which can make the hair feel crispy, depending on how much you use — be mindful as you apply it, so you can find the amount that works best for you.
“I personally like to mix a serum, oil or cream with a mousse or gel to get both the softness and hold for maximum frizz control on super humid days,” says Dickson.
Ingredients
When shopping for an anti-frizz product, proteins and moisturizing ingredients (like argan oil, glycerin and shea butter) are great since hair needs both of these things, according to Dickson. Oils can also seal in the goodness of previously applied products, she says.
Depending on the time of year or where you live, you may need more of one than another. For example, summertime humidity in New York should be counterbalanced with protein products to offset all the moisture in the air, but individuals in Los Angeles should lean toward moisture to offset the dryness.
Hair type
Straight hair: Stick with a finishing product, says Boton. You want something light enough for your hair not to appear greasy but strong enough to smooth it, adds Dickson.
Wavy hair: The product you choose depends on whether you’re applying heat to the hair or not. In general, curl-control creams can help seal in moisture and tone down frizz. You can also stick with a finishing product or apply after another product. Either way, you’ll want something heavy enough to hold the frizz but light enough not to pull out the waves, according to Dickson.
Curly hair: Moisturize and control curls with products that can hold and define patterns and then finish with a smoothing and moisture-wicking finisher.
Hair texture
Fine hair: Consider a light frizz-control styling product that wicks moisture away from the hair. If heat styling, blow dry the hair with a holding product, says Boton.
Thick hair: Apply heavier products packed with ingredients that will both add and seal in moisture, says Boton.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What causes frizz?
Regardless of your hair type, you can experience frizz. However, those with wavy and curly hair, may be more prone to it, according to our experts. Other contributors to the worsening of frizz are damage, improper hair care, aging, vitamin deficiencies, and illnesses, says Dickson.
- How often can you use anti-frizz products?
Every day if necessary. Most anti-frizz products are designed to be nourishing, so overuse isn’t usually detrimental, according to Dickson. Build-up can occur, but it’s nothing a clarifying shampoo couldn’t undo, says Dickson.
- What are the best ways to apply anti-frizz products?
Besides following the directions specified on the product, there are additional things you can do, depending on your hair texture.
Straight hair. “ I like to think of my dryer like a clothes steamer. I hold the hair taut with my brush and gently guide the hair into place with the nozzle,” she says. If you have fine, straight hair, try applying a little hairspray into your palms and smoothing down the frizz with your hands. Dickson prefers hairspray instead of wax because it’s not greasy.
Wavy/curly hair . Apply your anti-frizz product to damp hair and use either your finger or a wide-tooth comb to distribute it evenly. For frizzier hair pieces, wrap the hair around your finger to help mold the pattern into its preferred shape. She recommends air drying the hair because the more the hair gets moved while drying, the frizzier it can get. If you prefer to use a hot tool to dry, you can absolutely do so, but be gentle.
