Syracuse frat bros in awful video dig themselves into deeper hole

Their apology is a joke.

A fraternity at Syracuse University suspended for a series of offensive videos now claims the clips were satire — and claimed in a tone-deaf apology that "racism, sexism and homophobia are so wrong that they are laughable."

The Theta Tau chapter apologized in a lengthy statement, but emphasized that it is important to understand the video’s "context."

"Not to make excuses for the content of the video, but hopefully to make those who have been hurt by this video understand that Theta Tau is not a hate group in their midst — that we are not a house full of bigots or those willing to tolerate bigotry," the statement posted online read.

The offensive videos were posted on a secret Facebook group for the fraternity before they were published by the Daily Orange campus newspaper.

"I solemnly swear to always have hatred in my heart for n----rs, sp--s and most importantly the f--kin’ k---s,” one man can be heard saying in a video.

According to the Daily Orange, a fraternity member says "you f--kin’ k---s, get in the f--kin’ showers," and another tells someone "he’s drooling out of his mouth because he’s retarded in a wheelchair."

The school suspended the professional engineering fraternity, and Theta Tau's national organization said that it is looking into the videos.

The fraternity chapter claims in the statement that "it was a satirical sketch of an uneducated, racist, homophobic, misogynist, sexist, ableist and intolerant person." Theta Tau admitted that the language is "disgraceful," and "it made the active brothers very uncomfortable."

"Our organization would never demand, or even ask our new members to recite any of this," the statement read. "We spoke to the new members about their actual beliefs shortly after their parody and we all agreed that those words should never be spoken — in our house, or anywhere."

The national chapter of the fraternity did not mince words, calling the actions of the fraternity members "truly disgraceful" and saying that the skit’s satirical nature "does not excuse the behavior."

"The content of the video is unacceptable and directly violates the values and expectations that have been put in place for all of our chapters," the statement read.
