20-year-old dies building roller coaster, Iowa reports say. ‘Sweetest guy ever’

A 20-year-old contractor at an Iowa theme park was killed in a workplace accident on Monday, Jan. 23, according to media reports in Iowa.

Zachary Alesky was working at Adventureland Park in Altonna when he slipped on ice while carrying a steel beam, according to KCCI. The beam “crushed his chest,” the station reported.

First responders performed life-saving measures and the 20-year-old from Illinois was taken to a hospital, where he died, Altoona Police Lt. Alyssa Wilson said on Twitter. The incident is being investigated, but police are not treating Alesky’s death as suspicious, according to Wilson.

The Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment by McClatchy News.

“We are saddened by this tragic accident involving a contractor performing work at Adventureland Resort and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and coworkers,” Palace Entertainment, which owns Adventureland, said in a statement to the Des Moines Register.

Alesky, according to KCCI, worked for SkyHigh Coasters and was helping build the Flying Viking roller coaster.

Flying Viking, which will take riders on a 1,300-foot voyage at speeds of up to 26 mph, is scheduled to open this year.

Alesky got married in September to his high school sweetheart in Minooka, Illinois, according to their wedding profile.

“Sweetest guy ever, always the little prankster and always full of life,” his aunt, Jeanne Alesky DiCostanzo said in a Facebook post. “I will always love you my sweet nephew.”
