2 Kennewick Cal Ripken teams played in World Series tournaments. Here’s how they did
The two Kennewick teams playing this week in their respective Cal Ripken World Series will not win titles.
But they’ve both shown resilience the entire time.
The Kennewick National squad went 1-3 in its pool at the Cal Ripken Majors/70-foot tournament in Branson, Mo.
After a 1-1 start, KN fell 6-4 to the host Branson team on Sunday, then lost 10-5 to Crown Point, Ind.
The Kennewick squad didn’t qualify for the championship bracket, but instead the Iron Man consolation, single-elimination bracket.
The local team opened that portion of the tournament on Wednesday with a 5-3 win over Paragould Park of Arkansas, and now will play either the same Crown Point team it played in pool play, or a team from Alberta.Meanwhile, the Kennewick Americans went 2-2 in pool play at the Cal Ripken World Series for 10-year-olds in Crown Point, Ind.
The KA squad defeated Central York, Pa., 14-5 on Sunday to raise its pool-play record to 1-1.
On Monday, the Indiana team Crown Point Red beat Kennewick 6-4, before the local squad bounced back to beat the Aussie Drop Bears from Australia by a 10-0 score.
That 2-2 record allowed Kennewick to qualify for the championship bracket, which is a single elimination format.
But undefeated South Lexington Red of Kentucky beat Kennewick 5-1 to end its season.

Tri-City Raceway
A capacity crowd at Tri-City Raceway last Saturday night witnessed Tyler Reif of Henderson, Nev., win the NAPA Auto Care 150 — an ARCA West race.
Reif leads the ARCA West season standings and has two victories this season.
With a restart with 18 laps remaining, Reid found a way to get around Sean Hingorani of Newport Beach, Calif., for the win — finishing 0.486 seconds ahead of Hingorani.
Hingorani also has two victories this season, and he sits in second place behind Reid in the season-long standings.
Nine drivers finished on the main lap, including for NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, who placed ninth.
Biffle was a crowd favorite, having been a Late Model champion in the 1990s at the West Richland track.
Biffle was amazing back in those days. He’d win almost every Friday night in Portland, then pack up his car and equipment into the trailer and drive to West Richland. And it seemed like every Saturday night, he’d win there too.
One of the most popular trends this past weekend was Fanfest, which allowed fans to meet the ARCA West drivers, take selfies with them, and get their autographs.
▪ Thanks to Spokane writer Paul Delaney, who sent me some notes regarding Tri-City Raceway’s history with the ARCA West series.
Saturday’s race was the 10th time the series has competed at the West Richland track, but only eight drivers have taken the checkered flag.
Ray Elder (1968 and 1970) and Roy Smith (1989 and 1990) won the race twice at the half-mile tri-oval. Other winners besides Reif were Jim Cook (1969), Jack McCoy (1972), Dirk Stephens (1993), and Mike Chase (1994).
Jason Jefferson, who raced out of Naches, won the 2003 event — which was the last one until Saturday night.
