1 killed after motorist drives off Capital City Freeway into Auburn Blvd. car, Sacramento CHP says

One person is dead after a motorist veered off the Capital City Freeway and slammed into another vehicle Tuesday on Auburn Boulevard south of Watt Avenue in north Sacramento

According to the California Highway Patrol’s North Sacramento office, the 37-year-old man was behind the wheel of a 2023 Toyota Camry about 7 a.m. when a 2001 Lexus RX300 SUV veered off the northbound lanes of the freeway, through a chain link fence and into traffic on the 2900 block of Auburn, less than a mile south of Fulton Boulevard.

Auburn Boulevard runs parallel to the freeway along the border of Sacramento and Arden Arcade before merging with Interstate 80 and the driver of the Camry was heading south, several feet from the freeway, the CHP said. Only the fence separates the two roadways.

The Camry driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District paramedics. The driver of the Lexus SUV, a 53-year-old man, was taken to a hospital with major injuries, the CHP said.

The CHP did not identify either motorist and said that identification of the deceased would come from the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

No arrests were made but the crash remains under investigation, CHP said. The report did not indicate whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the incident.
