Who was the News-Leader Athlete of the Week from March 4-9? Vote now

The Springfield News-Leader is introducing an athlete of the week poll that will take place throughout the academic calendar for high school sports.

Nominations are open for every MSHSAA sport. You can nominate your favorite Southwest Missouri athlete, including their stats, in an email to News-Leader sports reporter Wyatt Wheeler by 11 p.m. each Sunday night.

The nominees this week for News-Leader Athlete of the Week from March 4-9:

Clayton Garrison, Chadwick — Garrison scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Cardinals to a 67-38 win over Braymer in the Class 1 state championship.

Grant Culver, Hartville — Culver never left the court while scoring 15 points with eight rebounds in the Eagles' 60-42 win over Weaubleau to win the Class 2 state championship.

Ashlen Garrett, Skyline — Garrett scored 37 points and grabbed six boards in Skyline's 61-47 win over Principia in the Class 2 state championship.

Emma Padgett, Fair Grove — Padgett had seven rebounds and four blocked shots in Fair Grove's 33-27 win over El Dorado Springs to repeat as Class 3 state champions.

Tyrique Brooks, Central — Brooks scored 17 points in Central's district championship win over Kickapoo. He followed by scoring 20 of his 24 points in the second half to lead the Bulldogs past Rockhurst to lead Central to its first semifinal appearance since 1963.

Peyton Ward, Marshfield — Ward scored 21 points for the Lady Jays in their 56-49 win over Helias Catholic to advance Marshfield to its first semifinal appearance since 2014.
