Cherriots awarded $500,000 toward south Salem transit hub

Cherriots has been awarded $500,000 from the federal government’s March funding package toward the Salem area mass transit district’s proposed transit hub in south Salem.

The hub, which is still in the planning stages, would be connect bus routes, paratransit vehicles, bikes and include a park and ride area.

“The funding I secured will be used to build a new transit center in south Salem, which will help improve mobility for residents and expand access to public transportation in our community,” said Rep. Andrea Salinas, D-Oregon.

Monmouth hires Rochelle Roaden as city manager

Rochelle Roaden has been hired as the city manager of Monmouth, the city announced in a prepared statement.

She replaces Marty Wine, who resigned in November. Christy Wurster has been the interim city manager.

Since 2018, Roaden has been the city manager of Dayton, where she also had been the city recorder and finance manager.

Roaden previously worked for 20 years in accounting, including at Walt Disney Imagineering.

Cherriots seeks artists for Hispanic/Latiné Heritage Month

Cherriots is seeking local artists for a project for Hispanic/Latiné Heritage Mont, which is celebrated from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 every year, to honor the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

The Cherriots project involves wrapping a bus with the artwork that is selected.

Submissions will be considered from artists who live in the Mid Valley or have ties to the area. The artwork must be original and honor Hispanic/Latiné culture and heritage.

To participate, submit a digital portfolio of the proposed artwork and a description to kirra.pressey@cherriots.org by July 12.

The artwork will be on the bus for Hispanic/Latiné Heritage Month and four months afterward.

Music theater company sets open house for June 2

Bridgetown Conservatory of Musical Theatre will host an open house from noon to 3 p.m. on June 2 in the Verona Studio Theatre in the Reed Opera House.

The Portland-based group says its goal is to fill the void in Salem left by Enlightened Theatrics, which closed earlier this year.

Bridgetown offers training in acting, dance and vocals for youth 12 to 19 years old and says it prepares them for entering into top music theatre programs.

A performance at the open house will be by Sage Gonzalez, Emily Irvin, Sarah Hansen, Jeremy Buxton and Jeremy Anderson-Sloan.
