Forget chicken or beef, the question at one French couple’s recent wedding reception was McNuggets or Big Mac?

In a viral TikTok posted on Sept. 17, newlyweds Ophélie Billaudeau, 25, and Thomas Billaudeau, 27, surprised their guests by revealing their wedding reception was being catered by McDonald’s — and from the reaction in their video, the attendees were “lovin’ it.”

The TikTok features Ophélie revealing the reception’s unexpected caterer by saying, “Thank you very much, and so I’ll let you discover tonight’s meal, the caterer…” At that point, one of the guests walks in wearing a McDonald’s uniform and carrying two large bags of food. As the guests laughed and applauded, the bride shouted the fast food favorite’s French slogan, “Come as you are!”

In an exclusive interview, Thomas reveals to PEOPLE that he and Ophélie had long joked that they would be serving McDonald's at their wedding, and on Sept. 16, their inside joke became a reality.

"We had the idea because we are big fans of McDonald's and jokingly said when we were younger that we would have McDonald's at our wedding," he says. "Eventually, we decided to go for it. People who know us weren't surprised."

He adds, "We only served McDonald's food, including all the burgers from the menu. We didn't serve fries or potatoes to avoid them getting cold and soggy."

Additionally, Thomas notes the fast food chain wasn't tasked with supplying dessert. Instead, a "very talented pastry chef friend" made the couple's wedding cake and additional sweets served to guests.

In an interview with the French newspaperLe Parisien, the bride and groom shared they suspected a few of their guests might object to being served McDonald’s, even though their wedding was a small affair with 45 guests in the town of Beauvais, France. “We were a little afraid of the reaction of certain aunts and uncles,” Ophélie explained. “They had a little trouble at first, but everyone ate eventually.”

Thomas tells PEOPLE that, in the end, their unique catering plan was a hit. "The guests were surprised, happy, and some were initially hesitant, but everyone ended up loving it," he says.

When asked if he would recommend more couples serve fast food at their wedding, Thomas said he "wouldn't necessarily recommend it," but he does encourage couples to ensure they have the wedding they want. "I believe everyone should do what they want for their wedding as long as there's a good atmosphere and the guests enjoy themselves," he adds.

While the response on social media was mixed, several commenters supported the couple’s decision to save money on expensive catering and opt for a meal that was affordable and a crowd-pleaser. (The couple didn't disclose the exact cost of the food for the reception.)

Even McDonald’s social media team chimed in. The fast food chain commented, “It was a pleasure to participate in this superb day.”
