Newcomerstown News: Freshman Hayden Dakin takes top prize in science fair

Forty-seven freshmen participated in the annual Spring of the Arts/ Science Fair at Newcomerstown High School. They were all students of Steven Pritchard, who teaches physical and environment science.

The Best in Show went to Hayden Dakin for his project, What Configuration of an Anode in a Microbial Fuel Cell Produces the Most Voltage?

Superior ratings were awarded to Kylie Bamberger, Ethan Barker, Kaelyn Brandon, Alex Elliott, Lucy Foster, Paul Garabrandt II, Briley Little, and Adriana Lopez-Hernandez.

Those earning excellent ratings included Renee Anderson, Addie Beaber, Henry Brode, Peyton Bryant, Noah Canfield, Chloe Carpenter, Finneas Collingwood, Roman Dalton, Calland Evans, Xavier Fahner, Abby Fauver, Natalie Frenton, Jensen Friel, Hayden Frost, Ana Gano, Matthew Gardner, Kaden Gibbs, Hailey Glazer, Martin Hernandez, Lucy Heston, Haylee Hewison, Rylee Johnson, Lukas Justice, Breann Kerr, Kaylyn Kinsey, Memphis Lehman, Kyler McBride-Porter, Jaide Miller, Ryder Milligan, Madi Moore, Kaylee Morrison, Ezra Norman, Jade Ott, Ryker Prysi, Colton Redman, Landyn Rodriquez, Amanda Ryan, Molly Seevers, Mason Shalosky, Jakob Simmons, Aiden Stonebrook, Ionna Thomas, Xander Varnes, and William Weaver.

Good ratings were given to Abby Barnhouse, Ester Carr, Solee Garland, Gunner Hayden, Cameron Kuder, Zoey Montgomerty, Gauge Stafford, Michael Stull, and Emilee Warehime.

“I was really proud of how hard the kids worked this year. We had a lot of factors against us in keeping pace with the due dates due to a variety of factors. However, each one rose to the challenge, and I am incredibly happy with how it turned out,” Pritchard said.

News from Historical SocietyThe Temperance Tavern Museum is closed for maintenance work. Olde Main Street Museum is available for tours, however interested parties must make arrangements in advance by calling 740-498-7735.

Village council highlights

● Street Superintendent Travis Goodwill has resigned effective March 8. The job will be posted internally for five days, and, if not filled from within, the village will advertise for applicants.● Bryan Grewell, dispatcher at the police station, resigned as of March 4. Also police office Eric Burdette resigned as of March 13.● Makayla Davis was hired for a part-time position at the water department.● Residents are reminded to remove all cemetery decorations including those on the monument by March 17. Cleanup starts March 18 at West Lawn and the State Street cemeteries. Decorations can be returned after March 25.● Fire Chief Kevin Parks announced the statewide burning ban is now in place. There is no open burning between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. inMarch, April, and May.● Discussion was held concerning residents reporting speeding cars on Heller Drive.
