Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:43

It's all over, and Newcastle hold out by the barest of margins to sneak to a 1-0 victory over Arsenal! A close-run, scrappy game was settled by an even scrappier goal, with Gordon's close-range tap-in requiring a five-minute VAR check before being given the green light. After both he and Murphy fluffed chances to score either side of Rice heading wide for Arsenal, Gordon's 63rd minute tap-in was a just reward for Newcastle, who improved significantly from a flat first-half performance. Arsenal piled on the pressure as they chased an equaliser, but couldn't test Pope in any meanginful way as the Magpies' defence held firm to condemn the Gunners to a first Premier League defeat of the season. Three points in a game that was far from black and white take Newcastle up two places into sixth, while Arsenal remain third having missed the chance to potentially go top of the table. They fail to close the gap on the top two, with arch-rivals Tottenham now the only side yet to lose a game in this season's top-flight.

FULL-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 1-0 ARSENAL.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:35

After a free-kick is punched half-clear by Pope, Arsenal keep on coming back at Newcastle through Zinchenko. He tees up Trossard, but the Belgian's first-time shot takes a huge deflection and skews behind for a corner!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:34

Martinelli tees up Zinchenko to cross from the byline, but the subsitute's drilled cut-back is intercepted and thumped clear by Lascelles. It's a real backs-to-the-wall job for Newcastle now!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:33

A smart flick forward from Joelinton sends Gordon racing away down the right, but Arsenal are able to get back in numbers to prevent a cross, before the offside flag is rasied against the goalscorer anyway!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:31

Trossard's blocked effort just minutes ago was the only one Arsenal have managed in the second half, and with stats like that it's no wonder they haven't been able to find a way back into this game!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:29

EIGHT additional minutes to play on the Tyne, and after the drama and fine margins we've already seen here, get ready for plenty more before the full-time whistle comes!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:26

BLOCKED!!! A corner is played short and the ball eventually comes to Trossard on the edge of the box, but his right-footed effort is blocked by a double effort from Livramento and Lascelles!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:25

As well as being the joint-highest goalscorers in the Premier League this season with 26 goals, Newcastle had the best shot conversion rate (18.6 per cent) and the second-highest expected goals total (22.1) in the competition prior to this game. Their singular goal from just two shots on target in this game suggest that this trend is set to continue for some time!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

Yellow Card Valentino Francisco Livramento

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:24

Ritchie and Gordon combine down the right as the latter sends a cross straight into the gloves of Raya, but the offside flag's up to give Arsenal a free-kick regardless.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:23

Nketiah is Arsenal’s highest scorer in the Premier League this season, with five goals from just seven shots on target. However, just one of his 19 goals overall in the competition has come north of London (v Burnley in May 2019), with all five strikes this season coming at the Emirates.

Yellow Card Bruno Guimarães Rodriguez Moura

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:19

Murphy pulls away from a challenge with Zinchenko with what looks like a pulled or dislocated shoulder, and there's no way he'll be able to carry on without getting that issue seen to quickly.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:17

Arsenal have had a huge 89.2 per cent possession over the last 15 minutes, but have conceded to find themselves 1-0 down during that time!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:16

Newcastle have now scored in their last nine Premier League games, the last six in a row at home, and are unbeaten in their last five after going 1-0 up.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:14

Martinelli fires an Arsenal corner in towards the near post, but Murphy's flick sends the ball up, over and behind for another set-piece.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:13

The onus is now on Arsenal to respond with a goal of their own, but coming up against the side with the second-best goal difference in the division, that won't be an easy task by any means!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:12

Anthony Gordon has now scored four goals in three successive Premier League seasons - 2021-22 and 2022-23 also - and after a slow start to his Magpies career, Gordon is now an integral part of this Newcastle side!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:09

GOAL GIVEN!!! All three queries are cleared by VAR with insufficient evidence to overturn any of them, and Newcastle's fans get another chance to celebrate as their 1-0 lead is set in stone!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:07

We're yet to restart as the VAR officials are checking almost every element of that passage of play, with questions over whether Willock kept the ball in play, Joelinton fouled Raya, and if Gordon was offside or not!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:07

Substitution Benjamin William White Oleksandr Zinchenko

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

19:01

WIDE!!! Joelinton sets off on a barnstorming run forward, but loses possession on the edge of the box. Arsenal can't clear properly though and the ball falls to Murphy, who drills a low ball across the face of goal and wide!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:59

WIDE!!! Martinelli finds space to cross from the left and hangs the ball up towards the back post. Trippier nods it half-clear, but Rice follows in with a bullet header that whistles just wide of Pope's right-hand upright!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:57

An hour gone and still no goals, but there's certainly been no let-up in the intensity or the feeling going into some of these challenges. Guimaraes and Jorginho's continuing battle is certainly one to keep an eye on, while you get the feeling Havertz could be walking a tightrope too!

Newcastle United are unbeaten in all 17 of their Premier League home games when they've been level at half-time under Eddie Howe's tutelage, winning nine, drawing eight, and keeping a clean sheet in nine of their last 11 such matches.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:51

A mis-kicked volley from Martinelli falls kindly for Havertz, but his shot from the edge of the area takes a deflection off Nketiah and Pope is able to collect.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:51

CHANCE!!! Newcastle break away at speed after Nketiah fails to get a shot away in their box. Great hold-up play from Wilson allows Almiron to latch onto the ball and surge through the middle before linking up with Gordon, but the winger again delays his shot and White makes a timely block! It's just not coming off in the final third at the moment for Newcastle!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:47

Gordon is sent running in behind thanks to a fantastic Guimaraes throughball, but he refrains from shooting after cutting inside, and a poor pass back to Guimaraes sees Newcastle lose possession!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:45

Newcastle are the first side to see three players booked for dissent and/or arguments in the first half of a Premier League game since then-champions Leicester City against Stoke City in December 2016.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:43

White hangs up a cross from the byline with Rice arriving late at the back post, but the midfielder can't get a clean connection on his header and Pope collects the ball with ease!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:42

Arsenal counter as Rice opens up space for Martinelli. He looks to beat Livramento around the outside, but the Newcastle substitute gets across well to shield the ball and prevents giving Arsenal a corner!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:40

KICK-OFF: Longstaff resumes proceedings at St. James', kicking off the second period for the hosts in black and white!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:39

On the front foot for much of that first half, Arsenal were still stunted in the final third by well-organised Newcastle defence. Nketiah had four touches in the box and contested nine duels but could only manage one off-target shot, while Martinelli created three chances and had the only effort on target in the opening 45 minutes. Let's hope the game opens up somewhat in the second half, and both sides' attackers come to the fore!

Substitution Daniel Johnson Burn Valentino Francisco Livramento

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:31

A late, and by the looks of it blatant, elbow to the back of Jorginho's head by Guimaraes has been missed by the referee, and VAR haven't intervened either. You can't help but feel that if the officials had seen that in real time, the Newcastle midfielder's match might be over...

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:29

Goalless at the break, as a first-half sparse with chances but high on drama comes to an end! Neither goalkeeper has really been tested, with Raya diffusing a close-range effort from Gordon and Martinelli shooting straight into the gloves of Pope. However, the cards began to flow with half-time approaching, particularly after a reckless lunge from Havertz. He was lucky to only pick up a yellow card, but the reactions of Gordon, Longstaff and Schar also earned the three Newcastle players bookings, while Guimaraes was lucky to avoid a sanction for a late elbow on Jorginho! It's not boiled over - yet - but a goal early in the second period could certainly see this edgy, tight match in the North East take an entirely different complexion.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:25

HALF-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 0-0 ARSENAL.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:25

Almiron and Trippier combine once more and the latter's cross leaves Raya stranded, but Saliba rises high to knock the ball away with a commanding defensive header!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:23

SAVED!!! Martinelli skips past Trippier as he cuts inside off the left, but with options queuing up in the box the winger chooses to shoot and fires a tame shot straight into the gloves of Pope!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:20

We'll play four additional minutes to close out a cagey first-half at St. James, and you get the feeling that a goal at either end could well blow this game wide open!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:20

Guimaraes finds a pocket of space on the edge of the box and lets fly, but drags his 20-yard shot a few yards wide of the target!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:19

Havertz's throughball almost puts Nketiah through on goal, but he's muscled off the ball by Lascelles in a legal and fair challenge!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:18

Trippier is making his 150th Premier League starting appearance, 54 of which have been with Newcastle, 58 with Tottenham and 38 with Burnley.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:17

CHANCE!!! Trippier overlaps to latch onto Almiron's back-heel and whip in a cross. Wilson's glancing header is skewed out to Gordon, who can't get a shot away in time as Raya dives onto the loose ball!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:08

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League games, winning eight scoring 28 goals. All three of their draws have been 2-2 scorelines in London derbies over the course of this run.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:07

Burn catches Saka very late indeed, and is very, very lucky to avoid a yellow card there after committing an earlier foul against the same player!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:04

OVER!!! The first clear-cut chance of the match, but it's wasted by Newcastle! From Guimaraes' high ball to the back post, Burn's header back across goal is deflected into the path of Wilson. He looks to volley goalwards with Raya in no-man's land, but fires it straight over the bar from close range as the offside flag is raised!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:03

Jorginho scoops the ball over the top of the defence for Tomiyasu to chase, but he can't latch onto the pass ahead of Trippier and it'll go behind for a goal-kick.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:01

Newcastle are unbeaten in their last six league games, scoring at least twice in each of the last five. They last scored 2+ goals in six consecutive Premier League games between August and October 2004.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

18:00

Rice advances up the left and wins another corner which is played short to Martinelli. His cross to the far post is attacked by Nketiah, but the striker can't get enough on his header to send the ball on-target.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:59

Saka's delivery from the corner is punched half-clear by Pope, but Jorginho's follow-up on the volley is sent sailing well over the top!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:58

Saliba sizes up a shot and has a go from range, but Lascelles jumps out of the defensive line to make the block and send the ball looping behind for another Arsenal corner!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:58

A deflected Saka shot is played wide by Rice to Martinelli, but England winger hesitates from striking the deflected cross back towards goal!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:52

Intense pressure from Almiron forces Gabriel back and into a rushed, deflected clearance, but a shove from the Paraguayan results in a free-kick to let Arsenal off the hook!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:51

Jorginho tees up Martinelli on the edge of the box, but his curling strike from 25 yards is an easy one for Lascelles to get in the way of.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:50

Guimaraes is crowded out on the edge of his own box and the ball breaks for Tomiyasu, but his first-time shot goalwards is deflected behind off Burn for a corner!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:47

Saka defies his size to shrug Burn off the ball with little difficulty, but he doesn't get far before being shunted over the sideline himself by Joelinton!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:45

An injury to Joelinton sees the Brazilian head to the sideline temporarily, but he's up and ready to continue for over 30 seconds until finally being allowed back onto the pitch by the referee!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:43

Only Manchester United (14) have won more Premier League away games at St. James' Park than Arsenal (13), with the Gunners winning eight of their last 10 visits to Newcastle in the top-flight.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

A first-time cross off Guimaraes' cut-back is curled into the box by Longstaff, but Raya gets off his line well for Arsenal to punch the ball well clear.

17:39

Nketiah makes a darting run into the box as Martinelli whips in a cross, but Schar's there to nod the ball away for the Magpies.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:38

Newcastle have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games against Arsenal, losing eight, drawing once and failing to score on eight occasions during that run.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:34

KICK-OFF: Nketiah gets the game underway for Arsenal, who will look to get on the front foot right from the off!

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:33

The teams are lined up on the pitch, and we'll be ready for kick-off straight after the playing of the Last Post to honour those fallen in conflicts throughout the world.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:31

Arsenal, meanwhile, make six changes from their 3-1 League Cup loss, with only Ben White, Gabriel, Jorginho, Kai Havertz and Eddie Nketiah keeping their places. The latter scored a superb hat-trick against Sheffield United at the Emirates, and will no doubt be keen to get his name on the scoresheet at least once more at St. James’.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:27

Despite several fringe players making huge impressions against Manchester United in midweek, Eddie Howe keeps faith with the side that started Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Wolves in their last league game. Callum Wilson’s first-half brace got the Magpies off to a strong start in the West Midlands, and he’ll be looking to do the same here, flanked by Anthony Gordon and Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

Third-placed Arsenal are yet to lose a game in this Premier League season so far, and a victory by five or more goals, however unlikely, would send them top of the table. The Gunners dispatched bottom side Sheffield United 5-0 in their last home game, but did suffer a 3-1 defeat to West Ham in the Carabao Cup prior to this one.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal

17:16

After a sluggish start to the season, seventh-placed Newcastle are unbeaten in their last six games, winning four of these. Held to a 2-2 draw by Wolves last time out, the Magpies will still come into this game high on confidence, after a massive 3-0 away win over Manchester United in their midweek Carabao Cup tie.
