A close-run, scrappy game was settled by an even scrappier goal, with Gordon's close-range tap-in requiring a five-minute VAR check before being given the green light. After both he and Murphy fluffed chances to score either side of Rice heading wide for Arsenal, Gordon's 63rd minute tap-in was a just reward for Newcastle, who improved significantly from a flat first-half performance. Arsenal piled on the pressure as they chased an equaliser, but couldn't test Pope in any meanginful way as the Magpies' defence held firm to condemn the Gunners to a first Premier League defeat of the season. Three points in a game that was far from black and white take Newcastle up two places into sixth, while Arsenal remain third having missed the chance to potentially go top of the table. They fail to close the gap on the top two, with arch-rivals Tottenham now the only side yet to lose a game in this season's top-flight.
